Torrent Thieves Ensure ‘Game Of Thrones’ Finale Breaks Piracy Records

Last night’s Dick In A Box finale episode for Game Of Thrones‘ third season set a new record for illegal downloads, proving once again that the Game Of Thrones-watching Internet contingent continues to put hands over ears and sing la la la when phrases such as “piracy is not a victimless crime” and “stealing is stealing” are mentioned.

Torrent Freak reports that the highest percentage of downloaders come from Australia, followed by the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom; and with the smallest population from that upper echelon of Game Of Thrones-pirating nations, Australia is really over-performing. So congratulations, everyone?

The season finale set a new BitTorrent record with more than 170,000 people sharing an episode simultaneously, and over a million downloading the episode less than 24-hours after its premiere on HBO. Despite the record-breaking numbers of torrent-crazed Daenerys Targaryen fans, HBO recently reported that Game Of Thrones is now the network’s most-watched series on air (averaging 13.6 million per ep).

In April HBO confirmed it had commissioned a 10-episode fourth season of the show, to no one’s surprise. The new season will air in 2014, until which time we’ll have to be satisfied with Daenerys GIF searches.
