I Only Care About The Sweaty Volleyball Scene In The New ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Trailer

Top Gun: Maverick

This morning I woke up to a text from my boyfriend. In all caps, he had written: “There’s another volleyball scene!!!!!” and I regrettably understood what he meant. Top Gun: Maverick has released a new trailer, reminding me that at some point in the future, I will watch this movie too many times. And between now and then, I will have to re-watch the first plane movie in preparation. I’m so excited. Wow. My bitterness aside, the volleyball scene is actually great.

Top Gun: Maverick picks up a good chunk of time after the events of the first movie as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) begins his duties as a flight school instructor. Is he still as cocky? Looks it.

The trailer is a bunch of action scenes in the Danger Zone, aviator sunglasses, the volleyball scene, and pilots who are somehow always sweaty-looking. Also, the motorbike returns.

Miles Teller (Whiplash, Divergent) stars as Goose‘s son and one of Maverick’s students Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw. Teller looks like Goose’s son but I can’t tell if it’s because they stuck a moustache on him or because it’s simply good casting. Probably both.

Val Kilmer reprises his role as Iceman, and Jennifer ConnellyJon Hamm, Glen PowellEd Harris, and cutie pie Manny Jacinto also star.

The film does look quite good, I’ll admit that much. It’s directed by Joseph Kosinski, who helmed Oblivion, from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (director of Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Peter Craig (The Town), Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), and Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle).

Top Gun Maverick will fly into cinemas June 25, 2020.

The volleyball sneak peek begins at the two-minute mark, if you want to re-watch it.
