Feast Your Eyes On Tommy Wiseau & Greg Sestero Doing A Scene From ‘Dark Knight’

There are a lot of good actors in the world, a lot of great writers and directors. The thing is, we know what great art looks like. We know the beats of great cinema. Masterful performances are a dime a dozen. What Tommy Wiseau brings to the art form is much more important: complete insanity. Anyone who has seen The Room or just seen Wiseau ‘acting’ comes away with an impression that — at best — his only reference points for acting are from having the concept of movies described to him. What he does is completely alien and, for that reason, completely novel. To my mind, this makes him perfect for playing the Joker.

The Joker is unpredictable, inscrutable. Horrific events in his past warped his brain to the point that he can longer tell the difference between right and wrong, the latter part of which is a quality he almost definitely shares with Wiseau. Luckily, you don’t have to try and imagine what the broken, almost musical cadence of Wiseau’s voice would sound like reading the Joker’s parts, because he has done it, on camera, twice.

Nerdist previously arranged to have Wiseau do something of an audition tape for the role, but this time they got him to do a full read-through of a scene from The Dark Knight, complete with The Room co-star Greg Sestero as Batman.

Is it up there with Heath Ledger‘s performance? I’m going to give a pretty solid ‘no’ on that one. But it’s not a completely terrible Joker; he’s undeniably weird as hell, laughs at moments that definitely don’t require laughter in any way, and he is genuinely very unsettling, which seems like it ticks all the boxes. I think we can all definitely agree that this kicks the shit out of whatever Jared Leto was doing.
