Set during the colonisation of Van Diemen’s Land by English settlers, the clip shows young Irish convict Clare (Aisling Franciosi) seeking revenge for the bloody crimes of Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Claflin).

Clare enlists Aboriginal tracker Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) in her harrowing trek, as she attempts to enact retribution on her former master before he reaches the new town of Launceston. Their journey sees the pair bond over their shared tragedies, and the trauma of losing the place they call home.

The clip suggests a marked change from Kent’s debut. Where her 2014 film largely served as a supernatural allegory for grief – and enjoyed an unexpected second life as a meme The Nightingale looks gritty and perpetually Earth-bound.

Damon Herriman and Michael Sheasby also feature. Have a peek:

The Nightingale hits Aussie cinema screens on August 29.
