The Hunger Games Makes A Killing At Aussie Box Office

Leather-clad teenagers making corpses of each other televised via live Jumbotron is the basis of the most popular movie in Australia right now. The anti-establishment satire The Hunger Games continues to make a killing at the local box office, having grossed a reported $4,838,114 across 471 screens, maintaining the top spot in local ticket sales since its release a fortnight ago. Upon its initial release (March 22nd), early predictions placed the film as a likely record breaker, and sure enough they are quickly proving accurate. Over the weekend The Hunger Games passed the $300 million mark in the U.S. and, according to MTV, the movie ranks right behind James Cameron’s Avatar in the all-time list of non-sequels to cross the $300 million mark in the shortest amount of time.

As a symptom of the film’s overwhelming success is toy brand Mattel‘s unveiling of The Hunger Games‘ ass-kicking heroine Katniss Everdeen recreated through the bendy plastic lens of Barbie. The Hunger Games Katniss Doll (currently on back order) wears a hooded jacket, top, and military-style pants inspired by the costume Katniss wore in the film. Comes complete with sensible shoes and an unwillingness to bend.
