Home and Away alum Brenton Thwaites (who also starred in an absolutely abysmal remake of The Blue Lagoon opposite Indiana Evans; also, Maleficent) has seriously upped his YA game by landing the lead spot as Jonas opposite a terrifying Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in Phillip Noyce’s (Salt, Patriot Games, Bone Collector) adaptation of Lois Lowry’s dystopian novel The Giver, the official synopsis for which reads as follows:

The haunting story of THE GIVER centres on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colourless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The film is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbury Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
The Giver also stars Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, Cameron Monaghan, and Taylor Swift, looks very impressive – like your new YA adaptation obsession – and opens August 15th.
