The Artist Wins Big As AACTAs Announce Inaugural International Winners

Friday night, a cavalcade of stars gathered in West Hollywood to celebrate the inaugural Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) International Awards. A ceremony where AACTA President and 2012 Australian of the Year Geoffrey Rush played host alongside fellow local heavyweights Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.

The night’s big winner was black and white drama The Artist which took home gongs for Best Direction (for French auteur Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (for Oscar frontrunner Jean Dujardin) and Best Film (for producer Thomas Langmann) beating out the likes of The Descendants, Hugo, The Ides of March, Margin Call, Melancholia, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, and We Need to Talk About Kevin. Elsewhere, Meryl “GOAT” Streep won Best Actress for her turn in Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady.

The inaugural AACTA Awards will be held at the Sydney Opera House tomorrow and broadcast on the Nine Network at 9:30pm AEST.
