A Swedish Version Of The Crown About King Carl Gustaf Is Coming & It’s Set To Be Just As Spicy

Just when you thought you couldn’t get enough of the royal family, Sweden’s TV4 are working on their own version of The Crown.

The new show will focus on 74-year-old King Carl XVI Gustaf‘s life, similarly to how The Crown tracks Queen Elizabeth II‘s journey.

Speaking to Variety, the head of Drama at TV4 Josefine Tengblad said this new show was similar to the King’s Speech where it follows the story of a reluctant King.

“It’s a little bit like The King’s Speech in the way that it portrays someone who is being groomed to become someone he’s not, and is having people trying to change him,” Tengblad said.

Gustaf’s life is said to extremely fascinating and genuinely moving, a life that not many people would be aware of.

“Other kings and queens are said to have had an impact on world events. The history of our King is something different. Not as highlighted internationally but at least as dramatic and fascinating,” co-writer of the series Åsa Lantz said.

“And for many of us, completely unknown,” Lantz added.

“I’ve personally never been a fan of monarchy, but I remember reading the treatment of six or seven pages while I was on a flight. As I was reading those pages, I started crying because it was so strong,” Tengblad said of the story.

The Swedish royal family are aware of the project and have met with Lantz to ensure all the facts are correct.

“As we understand it, it is planned as a drama documentary. When it comes to documentaries, it is important that they are as close to the truth as possible, and that the facts are presented correctly,” the Swedish Court’s Information Manager Margareta Thorgren told Dagens Nyheter.

“As for the dramatised part of the series, it is of course based on artistic freedom, something we have no control over.”

Well if it’s as good as The Crown, then sign me up baby.
