Superfreak GoT Fans Correctly Predicted Hodor’s Secret As Early As ‘08

There are spoilers in this article, okay? Do not read it unless you’ve seen Game of Thrones S6E5. You will be mad. It will not be fun. In fact, don’t read unless you get this ad which has already appeared on the NYC subway:

Okay. Last night was a fucking tragic episode in a way that even the Red Wedding didn’t quite manage (or at least, was very different to), in that not only did the kind, sweet Hodor die, but we learn that is was Bran who made him into Hodor in the first place. It was poetic, gut-wrenching tragedy.

It was also one of the first ~big reveals~ that shocked both book readers and non-book readers alike, because although this particular plot is of George R. R. Martin‘s design, it hasn’t been arrived at in the books yet.

But not one, but two superfreak fans predicted the tragic backstory of why Hodor – real name: Wylis – always said Hodor, which we now know was because he was HO-lding the Do-OR shut on the White Walkers and army of flesh-challenged skeletons army while Bran and Meera escaped.
The first, a member of the fan forum A Song of Ice and Fire who goes by the username Myrddin, predicted it scarily accurately back in 2008.

And the second, an author by the name of Michael Ventrella, guessed the meaning to Martin’s face back in 2013, during a series of fateful elevator rides at the Capclave literature festival in Washington, D.C.

The pair (who were both speakers at the convention, though as Ventrella says, “him more than me”) were staying on the same floor of the hotel, and thus ended up riding the elevator together a number of times.

The first time, their elevator ride was interrupted by a bunch of fans, whom Martin obligingly posed for photos – an encounter Ventrella wrote about on his blog:

Around the third time, Ventrella got the seemingly innocuous clue he needed.

And then the final time, Ventrella made the prediction that he had no bloody idea would one day be a real gut-puncher.

None… none of this is okay.
