James Gunn, director of amusing 2006 creature feature Slither, is back with another black comedy starring Ellen Page, Rainn Wilson, Kevin Bacon and Liv Tyler. Super is a vigilante superhero movie flick in the vein of Kickass, with Wilson in the central role as everyday guy Frank D’Arbo whose wife (Tyler) falls under the influence of a drug dealer (Bacon). Frank transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a self-designed superhero who lacks actual heroic skills. Enter Libby (Page) who joins Frank under the guise of superhero sidekick, Boltie. However derivative the premise might be, with Kevin Bacon’s awesomeness, multicoloured explosions and an amazing tagline (“Shut up, crime.”) attached to it this looks like it could be swell.
