Steve Carell Thinks It Would Be “Impossible” To Do ‘The Office’ Today

The US version of The Office is one of those show that I’ll watch from start to finish and then just start watching again, ignoring any number of other new shows. I enjoy it so much that I’m actually somewhat nervous that they might attempt to bring it back, losing some of the magic of the original in the process, but according to star Steve Carell, a reunion thankfully probably won’t be on the cards.

Speaking with Esquire magazine for their November cover story, the actor – who starred in seven seasons of the show – said that he’s heard the calls for a reunion season, but doesn’t think it would be a good idea to get the Scranton branch back together. Considering the prospect, he said that “it might be impossible to do [the] show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago.”

He went on to clarify his statement, saying:

“The climate’s different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today – which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”

While I am certainly somewhat curious to find out what the hell Dwight is up to in 2018 and whether Jim and Pam stayed together, some things are probably better left in the past, and this way we can remember The Office at its best without running the risk of some kind of dodgy reboot.

Steve Carell has a number of big movies coming up – he stars alongside Timothee Chalamet in the weepy drama Beautiful Boy, and will play Donald Rumsfeld in the Dick Cheney biopic Vice. He will later star alongside Nicole Kidman and Amy Schmer in the comedy She Came To Me, and will appear in the Minecraft movie, which is to be directed by Always Sunny star Rob McElhenney.
