If you wanna be my lover you better familiarise yourself with the hits of the Spice Girls, because I would very much like to see this musical inspired by the British pop troupe’s rise to international superstardom.
The loudly costumed quintet responsible for empowering millions of little girls with the “Girl Power” mantra (circa 1990s), are now the subject of a new musical titled Viva Forever! written by brilliant Absolutely Fabulous co-creator Jennifer Saunders.
Here is the synopsis. I like how you can already tell exactly where each Spice Girls’ song will fit into the story line. For example:
As one girl follows her dreams, VIVA FOREVER! charts her journey into the world of overnight celebrity and its impact on her mother (“Mama”), and the friends she thought she’d have forever (“Goodbye”). From London to Spain (“Spice Up Your Life”) and back again (“Right Back At Ya”), as the world judges you, it’s all about who you really are (“Wannabe”) and who you want to be (“Who Do You Think You Are?”), whatever the cost.
It opens in London on 27 November. I’ll be waiting…
