Sony Is Done With The PR Shitstorm, Ready To Bin Dr Luke Over #FreeKesha

WARNING: This post discusses sexual assault.

report from the folk at The Wrap suggests that Sony are just about ready to put the boot in and end their contract with music producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald over allegations that he sexually assaulted Kesha and the resulting public pressure.

Finally something. Looks like the #FreeKesha protesters achieved something.

It’s essentially a massive PR disaster for Sony, who weren’t doing themselves any favours by forcing Kesha to remain in a contract which stipulated that she had to continue working with her abuser. More and more fellow entertainers – like Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Adele – are offering Kesha support.
Though the New York Supreme Court has sided with Sony on the contract litigation, The Wrap reports that people within Sony are not ready to let this complete public relations nightmare continue any longer – and the only way they see out is to toss Dr. Luke.
Said one insider at Sony:

“There is no contest. Kesha has no case in regards to her contract but they can’t afford the Adeles of the world out in the streets calling the label unsupportive,”

Because Dr Luke’s contract doesn’t end until 2017, it’s likely that Sony will negotiate a paid exit. Looks like no money is too much to make this problem go away – a figure of $60 million has been floated, but is unconfirmed.
We’ll see how this pans out – but for now we’ll chalk it up as a positive for Kesha.
