Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” Wins in Venice

Well this looks encouraging. Sofia Coppola’s much-buzzed Marie Antoinette followup “Somewhere” has already drawn critical praise for its measured portrayal of a Hollywood has-been in the throes of existential crisis. Sound familiar? Of course it does. And even with subject matter as familiar (to Coppola fans) and generally repugnant as the first world problems of the rich and entitled, “Somewhere” also recently won the coveted Golden Lion Best Picture prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Despite stiff competition from Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, the jury’s decision was unanimous. Says Venice jury president Quentin Tarantino (who, incidentally, if you’re one for conflicts of interest and evidence of Hollywood nepotism, is Coppola’s ex-boyfriend and good chum): “This was a film that enchanted us from our first screening…Yet from that first enchanting screening, it grew and grew and grew in both our hearts, in our analysis, in our minds, and in our affections.”
