Smith’s Vegemite-Flavoured Chips: A Review

When people talk about what foods are iconic of Australia they invariably name damper* or Vegemite. That maroon-coloured spread with the full bodied tang of yeast will be the latest flavour to be honoured with a dedicated potato chip with the launch of Smith’s Crinkle Cut Vegemite Flavoured Chip. We decided to give them a try, and after passing the packet around the Pedestrian office here is what we thought…

Chris – 4.5/10
“At first I found it quite pleasing but then when the aftertaste (read: actual Vegemite flavour ) kicked in it simply tasted like a Smiths Original with the addition of a breakfast spread. I don’t think the vegemite adds anything in particular to the chip eating experience. Rather than cutting through the taste like it does when paired with toast it largely plays second fiddle to the richness of the chip.”

Bite…

Suz – 6/10
“I really like potato chips so these were never going to suck. Ironically, my main gripe with these guys is that they taste a little too Vegemitey. For whatever reason the experience confused my brain.”

Seb – 8/10
“It’s about bloody time Smith’s made Vegemite-flavoured crisps.”

Claire – 7/10
“If you like intense flavours these are not the crisps for you. I’ve never actually tried standard Vegemite because the smell makes me hate my nose (No, I don’t hate being Australian) and I think I actually liked the Vegemite chip.”

Katie – 6/10
“They’re kind of like BBQ but with a tangy, gravy aftertaste. I wouldn’t say they are 100% delicious. I give them a 6 but five of those points are simply due to the fact that they are chips and I love chips the most.”

So they scored on average a 6.3 out of 10, and are recommended for people who like chips and do not like Vegemite(?). They’ll be available in participating stores from 6 October 2011 for a limited time.

*Seriously, when was the last time you ate damper.
