Grab the cricket bat and prepare to fuck off up the model village, it seems that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are dipping their toes back into the horror-comedy pond via a brand new TV series.
Pegg and Frost, they of the hugely beloved films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End started their own production company Stolen Picture a little while back, which got financial and distributive backing from Sony Pictures Television back in September.
The company’s first TV project, as it turns out, will feature a dive back into that familiar well of normal life-meets-supernatural horror that served the pair more than ably throughout the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy of flicks.
Truth Seekers will follow a three-person crew of paranormal investigators, with each episode focusing on a different incident. Pegg’s description alone should be enough to get even half fans of Shaun of the Dead champing at the bit.
Each episode is going to be an adventure, a potential haunting or something. It’ll start as a very parochial idea, a very small business venture for these people, but it will expand as the series goes on to be something far more global. It’s a language everyone understands, the mystery of the unknown. ‘Shaun of the Dead’ was a very parochial story set in North London and somehow it managed to get this global reach because everyone understands the language of zombie movies.
The burgeoning production house also has a film in development known as Slaughterhouse Rulez, which also takes a horror-comedy bent with a story set in a well-to-do public school in the UK, which Pegg states is “very satirical, very much about the U.K. selling itself off,” but also “It’s about fracking as well, and that unleashes some awful subterranean demon.”
It’s not quite clear what role Pegg & Frost will have in the new productions, and whether their role will see the duo reunite on-screen, or whether it’ll strictly be an on-screen producing gig for them.
Either way, both of those projects sound extremely good. Definitely something to keep an eye on.
