The Princess Diaries films are all about thrusting unsuspecting plebs into the limelight, and the early-noughties classics mirrored that theme pretty well IRL. We’re not saying Anne Hathaway would have missed a Best Supporting Actress Oscar without first becoming the Queen of Genovia, but we’re not not saying it either. Obviously that whole deal has a #strong fairytale vibe, but what’s a decent yarn without the “ever after?”
If Hathaway and director Garry Marshall have their way, the series may just be getting a regal third instalment. Marshall told People he was with her “a couple weeks ago, [and] it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” and he mentioned the fact she’s “very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”
It’s news sweet enough for an involuntary foot-pop, but Marshall upped the ante by namedropping Chris Pine– remember that guy? – and hinting he might also be down for round three. According to the director, the only issue is “he’s quite big now, you know.”
The news comes after last year’s flip-flopping on behalf of Disney, who were seemingly torn between rebooting the Julie Andrews worship saga, and waiting for a primo script to do the story justice. Production hasn’t been confirmed, so right now though, it looks like all we have to do is wait for Anne to pop her sprog, don the tiara, and pick up that bloody fan.
