Showtime Picks Up ‘Animal Kingdom’ For US TV Series

David Michod‘s Shakespearean debut feature Animal Kingdom received universal acclaim for its gripping and darkly poignant portrayal of Australian suburbia, and the fallout success of all involved is proof of its impact (refer to extreme acts of over-achieving by Joel Edgerton, Jacki Weaver, Ben Mendelsohn, Guy Pearce… etc).

Need more proof of Animal Kingdom‘s crossover brilliance? American cable network Showtime has picked up a script based on the film. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the hour-long drama project will be executive produced by David Michod and the film’s producer Liz Watts, which hopefully means that the gritty realism of the movie will be retained.

It will be interesting to see how successfully the story translates to American television, but it is likely impossible for another actress to top Jacki Weaver’s dangerously sweet depiction of manipulative matriarch Janine “Smurf” Cody.
