‘Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland Shares “Painful” Truth Of Recent Health Scare

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland took to Instagram this week to reveal that she had been hospitalised, posting a selfie on her stories to reveal the “painful” truth of her chronic health condition.

The 27-year-old actress, who has long been open with fans about her health struggles, was born with a condition called kidney dyspepsia, an underwent a transplant in 2012.

“Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle and feelin’ cute,” she wrote in the accompanying caption. “I’ve decided to share my truth. As painful as it is.”

The actress said that her recent hospitalisation tore her away from work, but added that she remains grateful and that “health should always come first.”

She was forced to skip last year’s Screen Actors Guild awards to deal with her health, and later clapped back to comments about her weight, when she was accused of promoting eating disorders:

“[People say] ‘eat a burger,’ ‘your head is bigger than your body and that’s disgusting,’ … And you’re right! … No one’s head should be bigger than their body but considering I’ve basically been on bed rest for the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass. My circumstances have put me in a place where I’m not in control of what my body looks like. So I strive to be as healthy as possible, as everyone should.”

Sarah Hyland plays Haley Dunphy in the long-running sitcom Modern Family. The tenth and final season of the show is set to premiere later this year.
