Samuel L Jackson Responds To Scorsese’s Dig That Marvel Films Aren’t Cinema

Avengers and Captain Marvel star Samuel L Jackson has responded to Martin Scorsese‘s dig that Marvel films are not real cinema, gently but firmly setting the filmmaker straight.

In a recent Empire interview, Scorsese came out with a surprisingly elitist take on the beloved superhero franchise, saying:

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Soon after the remarks were published, Variety caught up with Samuel J Jackson at the opening of Tyler Perry‘s new studio in Atlanta, to ask for his feelings. He said:

“I mean that’s like saying Bugs Bunny ain’t funny. Films are films. Everybody doesn’t like his stuff either. Everybody’s got an opinion, so I mean it’s okay. Ain’t going to stop nobody from making movies.”

Jackson most recently played Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

He’s set to voice the character in the animated series What If …?, which explores how the Marvel Cinematic Universe might unfold if certain key events had happened differently.

Issues explored in the comics range from “What if Captain America had been elected president?” to “What if Gwen Stacey had lived?”, as well as more elaborate plots.
