Sam Worthington To Play Surfer Bro

Sam Worthington has been cast for Drift, an Aussie surfing action movie to be filmed in WA later this year.

It’s one of Worthington’s first local gigs after he was propelled to mega stardom following his lead role in James Cameron‘s box office-obliterating Avatar. Drift will be filmed near Perth, where Worthington is from, rather than Pandora, where most Americans probably now assume he lives. It’s set in the ’70s and will follow two brothers who move into a new town and come up against lots of local hostility – like bikies and other assorted haters who won’t give them lamingtons.

Surfing movies don’t usually have captivating plots, so we’re pretty keen to see how this one goes. Given that Worthington is now clearly in camp Cameron (he also starred in Terminator: Salvation), it’ll be interesting to see whether this new film can match his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow‘s epic surfer…epic, Point Break, which starred Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves and Red Hot Chili Pepper Anthony Kiedis.

WA’s government has pledged $1.5mil in funding to producers Tim Duffy and Myles Pollard, which is always a good start, right? Get on board, bros.
