Don’t you just hate it when you’re at Taylor Swift‘s fancy Fourth of July party when all of a sudden, you’re overcome with sense of your own insignificance in a vast, uncaring universe, where nothing is real and everything is transient?
The French have a word for this kind of exquisite suffering – I’ll be fucked if I know what that word is, but it was written all over Ryan Reynolds‘ beautiful face in the below photo, preserved on Instagram so that future generations might gaze upon it.
The photo, taken at Swift’s most recent July 4 bash and posted to Instagram by Tay’s childhood friend Brit Maack, shows Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively sitting on his lap as he stares off into the middle-distance, a pained expression on his face.
It went viral as hell as soon as it was shared, and the internet pondered Reynolds’ mental state, but six months on, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he insists that what we’re seeing is just his very normal resting face. He said:
“[That’s] a problem I’ve had all my life … If I’m not aware a photo is being taken, my natural resting face is one of a man dying. I had no idea somebody was taking a photo. Therefore I was resting comfortably in my persona of a man whose soul is visibly exiting this earth.”
As a life-long sufferer of resting bitch face syndrome, I more-than feel his pain.
Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, Uzo Aduba, Lorde and Kesha were also present at Swift’s luxurious Rhode Island compound, along with her then-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston.
There’s no word on whether any of them suffered any crippling existential crises while riding waterslides or sipping root beers, but we’ll be sure to get to the bottom of it for you.
