Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has shared some good news, revealing that his five-year-old son Ford is cancer-free, after a shock diagnosis several years ago.

Murphy was presenting an award to TV executive Dana Walden, honouring her for her work with the UCLA Jonson Comprehensive Cancer Center, when he shared the news.

He said that around three years ago, his son went to the doctor for a standard checkup, and she discovered an unusual lump during an abdominal exam.

“He sat up, she was able to press her fingers in a bit deeper, Her eyes widened. Something was not right. From that moment came a day of terror and scans …  My baby had a tumor the size of a tennis ball at 18 months growing behind his abdominal wall. And the doctor said this was bad.”

Murphy learned that his son had neuroblastoma, a cancer common in infants and children under ten, and went on to tell the audience:

“Ford went through a six hour surgery and years of intense exams which required hours and hours of anesthesia. I cannot express to you in this room how difficult this was on him, how difficult this was for our family.”

He said that while he has yet to emotionally recover from the stress of the past several years, his son is better. “I am so proud to proclaim that he is cancer free,” he said.

Last year, he shared a photo of his son’s progress, revealing that he and his family had donated a hospital wing in tribute to Ford and made a gift of $10 million.
