There are not many actors who can make ultra-violence sexy and Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) is smart enough to know when he’s onto a good thing, reuniting with the world’s sexiest head stomper, Ryan Gosling, in the blood-soaked Thai gangster revenge, Only God Forgives. Originaly titled Only God Forgives (anyone who touches Ryan Gosling’s face!), the film sees Gosling’s Julian exiled to Bangkok, running a drug fronting Thai boxing club until his brother is murdered. The arrival of his super-nasty revenge seeking mum, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), pits Julian against the most fear sword welding psycho in Bangkok. Cue severed limbs, heaps of blood, and vintage Gosling badassery.
Footage and some downright brutal promo shots of Gosling wearing the violence chic mince meat face surfaced earlier in the year, but the latest two trailers and conformation that the film will play in competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival ensures that this will be another wild and rewarding ride for fans b-grade schlock at its classiest.
