Russell Crowe To Make Directorial Debut

Russell Crowe is reportedly keen to star in a film based on crime novelist James Ellroy’s original screenplay 77, and apparently he has also expressed his desire to direct the film too. And why not? He’s Russell MF Crowe.

77 is about the unsolved murder of an LA police officer in 1974 during a notorious shootout between members of the Symbionese Liberation Army and the LAPD. The story will be portrayed through the eyes of two police officers involved – one black and one white, though it hasn’t been confirmed which role Crowe will play.

Crowe’s breakout American role was playing tightly wound cop Officer Wendell “Bud” White in the 1997 adaptation of Ellroy’s novel L.A. Confidential directed by Curtis Hanson, so he’s familiar with Ellroy’s wordy period vibe. In the past, Crowe has been attached to various directing projects (including a biopic on the Bra Boys), but none have eventuated.

In other news, an album by Russell Crowe & The Ordinary Fear of God will be released in May. Awkward.
