Russell Brand Says He’ll Try To “Gay Marry” Tony Abbott During Australian Tour

Russell Brand will be blessing Australia with his unique brand of trews in October this year, during his Trew World Order tour, performing politically-charged standup at shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Widely known for featuring current Australian political fodder in his youtube smackdowns, Russell Brand told news.com.au that his world tour will be adapted for Australian audiences and affairs: “There’ll be loads of stuff about your crazy Prime Minister, what’s his name? Tony Abbott. I might try and gay marry him when I get there. And we’ll be talking about the immigration situation,” Brand said.

While a fabulous Branbbott wedding would no doubt cause Abbott’s approval rating to soar among key demographics, the timing of such a proposition landed on a day where Prime Minister Abbott continued to actively shoot down developments in the Marriage Act – today, Tony Abbott responded to Ireland’s landmark referendum result for marriage equality by ruling out a similar approach for Australia. Abbott dismissed the possibility of hosting a referendum to decide on same-sex marriage, saying:

“Under the constitution, questions of marriage are the reserve of the commonwealth parliament… plainly this is a matter that could come before the commonwealth parliament if members of parliament wanted it to be raised.”

In his interview with news.com.au, Brand also touched on the jarring cognitive dissonance he felt during the UK election hype, taking place in parallel to the executions of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran:

“There [was] people grieving their dead sons. The [UK] election seemed meaningless and the [Bali executions] were going on at the same time which made the political landscape seem so hollow and shallow and disingenuous.”
