‘Wolf Of Wall Street’ Producer Faces 25 Years In Jail For Money Laundering

Riza Aziz

Riza Aziz, a producer who helped finance The Wolf Of Wall Street, is facing 25 years behind bars after allegedly getting caught up in some dodgy financial dealings of his own.

Prosecutors in Malaysia have charged the producer with five counts of money laundering, saying he received $248 million in illicit funds from the country’s state development fund.

The 1MDB fund was set up by his stepfather, disgraced former prime minister Najib Razak, with the stated aim of driving the country’s economic development.

Prosecutors claim that Aziz used money siphoned from 1MDB to purchase luxury properties in L.A., New York and London, and to start a film production company, Red Granite Pictures.

Red Granite was a major backer of The Wolf Of Wall Street, and up to $155 million of Malaysian government funds were used to finance the film.

Riza Aziz is currently out on bail, and if convicted, faces five years in prison for each of his five counts of money laundering. He has plead not guilty to the charges.

Various celebrities have found themselves personally caught up in the 1MDB scandal, including Miranda Kerr, who returned a $10.5 million diamond necklace gifted to her by financier Jho Low.

Leonardo DiCaprio was also ordered by a court to return an Oscar statue originally won by Marlon Brando, and a Picasso painting, both of which were given to him by Low.
