This past year was undeniably pretty slow for films, with a lot of studios shoveling out their dregs as cinemas around the world shut down because of the pandemic. As a result of this, though, there is a plethora of crap for the annual Golden Raspberry Awards, celebrating the worst in film, to choose from. The Razzie nominations came out today, and there are some real stinkers among the bunch.
The nominees for Worst Picture include Doolittle – featuring an infamous scene in which Robert Downey Jr yanks stuff out of a dragon’s butt – and Sia‘s wildly misbegotten Music. Erotic drama 365 Days, which was described by Variety as “a thoroughly terrible, politically objectionable, occasionally hilarious Polish humpathon”, also scored a nod for worst picture.
The Razzie nominations in the acting categories feature a diverse array of stars, from the usual suspects like Adam Sandler and David Spade, through to veteran actress Glenn Close, whose Oscar bait-y performance in Hillbilly Elegy did to go over very well with critics. Lucy Hale and Maggie Q both got nods for Blumhouse’s horror reboot of Fantasy Island.
One aspect of this that I do take issue with is the inclusion of my queen Anne Hathaway for The Witches. She snatched the wig right off of my – and her own – head with her virtuosic performance as a woman who hatched out of an egg in Norway, even studying old Norse poetry for the role, and the disrespect is frankly staggering.
