Aside from featuring my 90s movie boyfriends Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt on screen together for the first time, Quentin Tarantino‘s new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is also gaining lots of buzz due to the subject matter of Charles Manson and the Manson Family murders of 1979.
The film will explore the death of actress Sharon Tate, who was married to director Roman Polanski and eight-and-a-half-months pregnant when she was stabbed to death on August 9, 1979 in her Los Angeles home along with four other visitors. In the movie, DiCaprio will play Sharon’s fictional neighbour – and the late actress will be played by Aussie ledge Margot Robbie.
Sharon’s sister Debra Tate has been vocally opposed to the film, which will be released next year, the 50th anniversary of the Tate murders, along with The Haunting of Sharon Tate, another project starring Hilary Duff as Sharon.
Back in March, Debra told People that Tarantino hadn’t consulted her before forging ahead with his movie, saying:
I think it’s terribly irresponsible [not to reach out to me], especially since I own Sharon’s licensing so that I can help protect the way she’s viewed through the public’s eyes.
But the outlet is reporting that Debra is now endorsing the movie, after the Oscar-winning director finally made contact and also changed the released date from falling on the same day as the 50th anniversary. “I’m pleased he reached out,” she told People. “I thought it showed a lot of class and sensitivity to move up the release date.”
Sharon’s sister added: “He has done nothing but respect me and be very forthcoming. I have very high hopes for this project.”
The film will hit cinemas in the US on July 26, 2019, rather than the originally intended August 9 release date. Along with DiCaprio, Pitt and Robbie, this film also stars Burt Reynolds, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis and Dakota Fanning.
Tarantino has stirred up controversy by also casting Emile Hirsch, who has had several allegations of assault levelled at him, as Sharon’s friend Jay Sebring.
