Qantas To Trial In-Flight Internet

Long haul flying is the pits (#FirstWorldProblems).

If you aren’t inhaling the toxic body odour of a man who looks like a goldfish then you’re almost certainly going to be stuck between an entire family dressed identically in Ugg boots and velour two piece tracksuits, juggling an iPod full of Adele and Katherine Heigl movies in one hand, chowing down on a fistful of Crunchies in the other (both true stories). Thankfully, Qantas will be introducing The Internet on all Sydney/Melbourne to Los Angeles Airbus A380 flights beginning from May as part of an eight week free trial.

The catch – because there’s always a catch, and there are a few here – is that you’ll be limited to regular web browsing, email and the use of smart phone/tablet apps. You can link up as many devices as you like, but you’ll be limited to 35MB of data usage, which will be just enough to live tweet all the incredible things you can see both within and outside of the cabin: Instagram sunset-over-the-wing photos for all! Skype and regular phone calls will remain blocked, thankfully, because you know there are people who would talk the entire duration of the flight.

The biggest catch: you’ll have to have a first or business class seat for the initial trial period. Eventually it will filter down into cattle class, but by then you’ll have to produce the plastic to watch ridiculous videos of the airline’s ambassador.

The first available flight to LA during the trial period is going to cost you at least $10,332, which is a pretty fair price to pay to never again endure an in-flight Heigl Manoeuvre.

Now that’s #QantasLuxury. Who’s ready to party?
