Poor Maggie Gyllenhaal Keeps Getting Asked About Taylor Swift’s Scarf

Because no corner of our lives can be free from the juggernaut of publicity that is called Taylor Swift, even glamorous, distant indie favourite Maggie Gyllenhaal (the superior Gyllenhaal) has been for some time fielding questions, to her bemusement, about a garment belonging to one T. Swift.

The garment in question is a scarf, and the motivation behind fans’ frenzied queries as to its whereabouts is this song:

All Too Well‘ is rumoured to be about Jake Gyllenhaal (the lesser Gyllenhaal), and features the line, “I left my scarf there at your sister’s house“.

Apparently this has been enough to see people hassle Maggie about the fkn scarf on the regs. Incredibly (and charmingly), up until last night, she had exactly zero idea what the hell they were talking about.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen read a question from a fan that was, yep, about the scarf. Gyllenhaal looked perplexed, saying, “You know, I never understood why everybody asked me about this scarf. What is this?

After Cohen explained, she graciously conceded that the scarf could be at her house: “I am in the dark about the scarf. It’s totally possible, I don’t know. But I have been asked this before and I’ve been like, ‘What are you talking about?’

Watch her be the kind of person we all aspire to be – i.e., blithely untouched by the Swift Promo Machine – below:

Also just for the record: everyone knows that not every song is non-fiction, yeah? People make stuff up for poetic effect pretty often? We’re all across that? Okay, great.
