Pixar Boss Reveals Details on ‘Toy Story 4’, Hints At Genre Shift

The release of the fourth installment of Toy Story is a hideously cruel two years away—reportedly dropping in 2017—and details on the release have been disappointingly few and far between. Will Spanish Buzz return? What’s happening with Andy? Will Emperor Zurg feature? These questions and more provoke an existential crisis within us all. Dark days.

Pixar President Jim Morris has broken the drought and revealed a few precious details on Toy Story 4 overnight, however, in an interview with Disney Latino (the interview is in Spanish, me no gusta). Translations of the interview have discerned the following things, however:

  • “The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. I think this movie is not part of this trilogy,” Morris said. The first three Toy Story films were undeniably flawless; tarnishing perfection by jumping the shark would be criminal. Responsible restraint right there.
  • “It’s not a continuation of Toy Story 3,” he adds, suggesting that any kind of timeline, set of characters or location are possible. Curious.
  • “It will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not focus on the interaction between the characters and the children.” This confuses and scares me profoundly. Somebody hold me.
  • He ends with, “I think this will be a very good movie.” It’s something that I assumed was a given, but the reassurance is nevertheless comforting.

‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’ writing duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack will
make their Pixar debut by penning the script. You’ve still got a friend
in John Lasseter, thankfully, who is reportedly on board to direct.
