‘SNL’s Pete Davidson Opens Up On Dating While Dealing With Mental Illness

Last weekend, the media lit up with reports that Ariana Grande was dating Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, after breaking up with her boyfriend of several years, Mac Miller. The new relationship has brought the 24-year-old comedian to an all new level of media attention, and on Thursday night, he took to social media to clear the air with regards to dating while dealing with a mental illness.

Last year, Pete Davidson revealed that he had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, after finding himself in the midst of a “really bad mental breakdown” in late 2016. “This whole year has been a fucking nightmare,” he wrote at the time. “This has been the worst year of my life, getting diagnosed with this and trying to figure out how to learn with this and live with this.”

On Thursday, he took to his Instagram stories to say:

“Normally I wouldn’t comment on something like this cause fuck you, but [I’ve] been hearing a lot of ‘people with bpd can’t be in relationships’ talk. I just wanna let you know that’s not true. Just because someone has a mental illness does not mean they can’t be happy and in a relationship.”

He continued:

“It also doesn’t mean that person makes the relationship toxic. Everybody is different and there are a lot of treatments for mental illnesses and I have done/am doing all of them … I just think it’s fucked up to stigmatize people as crazy and say that they are unable to do stuff that anyone can do.”

He went on to say that he chose to speak out because he wants “everyone out there with a mental illness” to know that he loves and understands them and it’s “not true” that they can’t be in relationships.
