While we’ve never fully understood the appeal of perennial Logies contender Packed To The Rafters, it doesn’t surprise us that it is once again the highest rated show on Australian television. With an average viewership of 1.953 million, Rafters edged just ahead of British period drama Downton Abbey to rank as the most watched TV show of the year so far. Australia’s Got Talent (also Seven) came in third with an average viewership of 1.829 million while Ten’s Masterchef came fourth (each episode is submitted as a separate program) and accounted for four other spots on the top fifteen. Culinary nemesis My Kitchen Rues (Seven) ranked seventh while Dancing With The Stars (Seven, again) rounded out the top ten with 1.525m viewers. Channel Nine’s highest rated show was its Sunday night news at 17th place. This is sad for obvious reasons.
Some observations…
– Television watchers (not to be confused with people who watch TV shows they have downloaded on the interwebs) appear to skew old. Real old. Like, “British period dramas appeal to my sensibilities” old.
– Is Channel Nine even operational right now? They account for zero of the top fifteen shows of the year so far.
– Winners and Losers is truly one of the worst shows we’ve seen this year. 1.485m people must hate “entertainment”.
– Food is good. Keep doing that.
– If all else fails launch a reality competition show. Ensure there is room for celebrity judges/cameos.
– We’re a parochial bunch. Of the top 20 TV shows, 19 are Australian.
– Nine will crack the top five (and save some face) when Underbelly: Razor premieres later this year.
