Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition that occurs when the pancreas does not produce insulin. According to Diabetes Australiathose with type 1 diabetes depend on daily insulin injections or an insulin pump.

The artist posted a side-by-side comparison photo – one from 13 years ago and another from present day – showing the physical differences between the two periods of his life.

“13 years ago today I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” he wrote online. “The picture on the left is me a few weeks after my diagnosis. Barely 100 pounds after having lost so much weight from my blood sugar being so high before going to the doctor where I would find out I was diabetic.”

The 26-year-old then celebrated his progress and thanked his family and loved ones for their endless support.

“Happy and healthy. Prioritising my physical health, working out, eating healthy & keeping my blood sugar in check. I have full control of my day to day life with this disease & I’m so grateful to my family and loved ones who have helped every step of the way.

“Never let anything hold you back from living your best life. Thank you to all my fans for your kind words and support. Means more than you know. Love you all,” Jonas wrote.

Actor and fiancée Priyanka Chopra commented: “Everything about you is special. With or without diabetes.”

Jonas has always been open about his condition, giving countless interviews to help raise awareness for diabetes. In 2015 he co-founded Beyond Type 1a nonprofit organisation aimed at harnessing the power of social media and technology to educate on a global level.

Per their website, the founders – Juliet de Baubigny, Jonas, Sarah Lucas, and Sam Talbot – fund the operation so all money raised can go directly to educational programs and research for a cure.
