‘The Proud Family’ Is Getting A Reboot On Disney+, So Put The Theme Song On Repeat

The Proud Family

Sometimes, during a busy week, things slip through the cracks. It happens, but this week I somehow missed the news that Disney is bringing back OG animated series The Proud Family – one of many I habitually watched on Disney Channel back in the day. The nostalgia content, it never ends.

The Proud Family first aired in 2001 and wrapped up in 2005, when I was but a wee tadpole. Sadly, none of the original episodes are on Disney+ (I checked), which is a big ??? but The Proud Family Movie is available to stream. Come to think of it, I don’t think I ever watched the movie. Oops.

(Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch, Recess, That’s So Raven (!!!), Even Stevens, and a bunch more OG shows are on it though)

Jo Marie Payton, who voiced the unstoppable grandma Suga Mama, confirmed new episodes were on the way during an appearance on Good Morning America.

“Yeah, Suga’s large and in charge,” she told host Keke Palmer. “That’s all I’ve got to say – except for Suga Mama will be doing some new episodes come February.”

It’s still not yet known whether the new episodes will pick up right where The Proud Family dropped off in 2005 or if it’ll be about life in 2020, like the Lizzie McGuire reboot. Either way, I’m happy. And I’m going to go ahead and get my hopes up that a reboot means the original episodes are headed to Disney+ next year too.

The Proud Family starred Kyla Pratt as Penny ProudTommy Davidson as Oscar, and Paula Jai Parker as TRUDY!

And who, who, can forget about that iconic theme song by Solange Knowles and featuring Destiny’s Child.

NOTHING WILL EVER BEAT THIS.

On repeat, all weekend.

According to Deadline, news of a reboot first surfaced in August when Davidson told @WhereIsTheBuzzTV about it, but this is the first time the reboot was discussed on a Disney-owned network.

And here’s Solange singing the theme song during a concert in 2017 and the crowd singing it right with her.
