New ‘Constantine’ Trailer set to Excite and/or Enrage Comic Book Fans

At some point in the last few years, probably soon after the success of Iron Man 2, the Illuminati who run Hollywood passed an edict saying that every new film and TV show had to be based on a comic book of some sort. Now we’ve burned through all the stuff everyone knows, it’s on to the slightly more obscure characters, like Marvel‘s Guardians Of The Galaxy, and Alan Moore‘s occult detective Constantine, who is getting his own NBC show later this year.

While we’ve well and truly reached the point of diminishing returns with these comic book adaptations, the trailer for Constantine arrived on the internet overnight, and surprisingly enough, it looks pretty damn decent.

The hard-bitten John Constaine was created by Moore along with Steve Bissette and John Totleben in the ’80s, and was originally part of the DC Comics title Hellblazer. The “dark” and “edgy” story mixes elements of the occult in with real life, and, fun fact, the protagonist’s look was originally based on that of ’80s pop star Sting

There was a Constantine movie in 2005, starring sentient plank of wood Keanu Reeves, but I just called up a mate of mine who happens to be a pretty huge comic book nerd, and he told me fairly curtly that the character in the movie did NOT reflect the one he knows and loves. Thus far, it seems Welsh actor Matt Ryan‘s portrayal in the show is a lot closer to the mark.

The Constantine trailer also hints at the emergence of a new, post Game Of Thrones TV trope in which there is a mysterious ‘big thing’ coming that all characters must refer to constantly.
