Netflix Is Toying With A Hefty Fee Increase For Lucky Aussie Subscribers

If you ever thought the universe was conspiring against you, and you in particular, in a myriad of teeny-tiny ways… well, you just might be right. Sorry.

We can say that with impunity, because it’s been revealed Netflix is toying with raising its subscription fees.

The Australian reports the streaming juggernaut has been trying out new pricing models over the weekends. Those increases see the monthly cost of the bog-standard service jump from $8.99 to $9.99, the double-device service from $11.99 to $13.99, and the Ultra HD premium service from $14.99 to $17.99.

Netflix said the trial has only been aimed at select prospective users, and that they may not choose to implement the fee hikes on a larger basis. However, The Australian also notes the test comes ahead of a new shake-up to GST, which will hit overseas-based digital content providers with a hefty new levy.

It’s not yet clear how – or if – the service will choose to implement those new prices on a broader scale to recoup their newfound tax obligations, but it’s most definitely on the (House Of) cards. For the time being, it may be best to sign up on a Wednesday or something, yeah?
