NBC Eyes Marieke Hardy’s Laid

Australian TV used to appeal only to Australians (and some British people) because it was parochial, inscrutable to outsiders and filled with literal Dad jokes and casual racism. Nowadays we’re a global ideas factory! Following stateside interest in our nouveau riche bogans, our old-timey true crime stories and our anthropomorphic dogs who smoke weed, US execs have turned their gaze to ABC’s Laid with reports suggesting a reboot by US network NBC.

Deadline reports: “NBC is developing a U.S. version of the Australian black comedy series Laid, from BermanBraun. Ali Rushfield (Help Me Help You) will write the script for the project, which was brought to NBC and BermanBraun by Jeremy Fox and Kary Mchoul of Digital Rights Group.”

Written and conceived by Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher, the comedy explores the existential crisis of someone whose ex-lovers keep dying. Our main reservation is that NBC are the folks who attempted to emigrate Kath and Kim in ’08 (and we all know how that ended) but Americans really love their sex and death so maybe this one has a chance.

Laid is currently shooting its second season in Melbourne.
