Naya Rivera Says She “Put Career First” & Had Abortion While Filming ‘Glee’

‘Glee’ star Naya Rivera has a memoir coming out soon titled ‘Sorry Not Sorry‘, and gave fans a sneak peek – which includes a story about having an abortion.
The actress has an exclusive interview inside the newest version of US entertainment mag People, and while much of the memoir is uplifting memories of the actress getting her big break as a child, the actress opens up about her harder moments too.
She speaks of struggling with anorexia as a teenager, and describes what it was like to have an abortion while still having to continue filming for ‘Glee’.
Rivera says she wanted to speak out to let other women struggling that they are not alone.

Rivera says she found out she was pregnant with Ryan Dorsey‘s child in 2010, mere weeks after breaking up with him to focus on her career.
She says she didn’t tell her now-husband about the pregnancy, and chose to go through the procedure alone. She had the termination on her one day off from filming episodes for ‘Glee’.
“It was very scary to open up about everything.

It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the hell?’

But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”
Rivera married Dorsey in 2014, and now has an 11-month-old son, Josey, with him.
The actress says she hopes one day her son will read the book, and it’ll teach him about some of the struggles women can go through:

“I hope Josey will read it one day. I hope it gives him a better perspective on the issues women face.”
Speaking out on issues such as abortion can be an extremely hard thing to do, because sadly abortion is still highly-stigmatised and women’s autonomy over their own bodies still somehow identifies to some as a matter for public discussion.
Mad love to any woman who is able to speak out – it ain’t easy, but it sure as hell makes it easier for other women facing it, or needing to talk about it.

‘Sorry Not Sorry’ is being released on September 13.
