Nash Edgerton Joins Aussie Contingent At Cannes

New Nash Edgerton short Bear has been selected for competition at next month’s Cannes International Film Festival. Competing against eight others in the short film category, Bear is the followup to Edgerton’s critter-centric short Spider and was co-written by Blue Tongue kin David Michod, winner of 2010’s Sundance World Cinema Jury Prize. Luckily for Edgerton, Michod isn’t the only prize-winning filmmaker involved. Reprising his role as the prank-prone “Jack”, Edgerton stars alongside local actress Teresa Palmer and Samson & Delilah writer/director Warwick Thornton who captured Cannes’ Caméra d’Or two years prior.

Says Edgerton: “To be honest when I got the call I thought someone was pranking me. It’s a huge honor that Bear has been selected and I haven’t stopped smiling. I’ve always wanted to have a film play there and I’m just so thankful to everyone who pitched in to help get Bear made. It’s very exciting and totally surreal that this time next month we’ll be premiering Bear in competition at Cannes.”

Bear’s inclusion bumps the festival’s Aussie contingent to three with two directorial debuts announced for competition in the last week – Justin Kurzel’s Snowtown and Julia Leigh’s “Sleeping Beauty”. Can we talk about a renaissance yet? Quick, somebody write a trend piece.
