The Most Brutal Rejections In Australian ‘Bachelor’ History

There isn’t an office, bus, train, house, random street in Australia that isn’t abuzz with chat about THAT FINAL ROSE CEREMONY on Bachelor Australia last night. Hoo boy, mates! What the shit did we watch!

In case you somehow did manage to miss the absolute cracker of an ep, Nick Cummins rejected BOTH his final picks, Sophie Tienman and Brittany Hockley, opting instead to continue his quest for love. Aka likely bone the entirety of single women in Sydney, amirite? AMIRITE?

Anyway, the brutality of the rejections – usually we just see one heart die on the spot in these final eps, but TWO? Wild stuff – made me think of previous Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachie In Paradise moments where I reeled back so hard into the couch I became one with it. I’m talking the brutal rejections, which by the way aren’t always limited to the final rose ceremony.

Friends, walk with me down memory lane.

1. ALI GETS DUMPED BY TIM (SEASON 1, BACHELOR)

We’re all aware Ali has had her heart broken QUITE a few times, but it was her first rejection during the second-last episode that broke hearts across the nation. Here’s hoping she finds the right guy on Bachelorette this year, right?

2. RICHIE DUMPS NIKKI (SEASON 4, BACHELOR)

FAAARK you guys, this (for me) is the most brutal rejection I can remember in Aussie Bachie franchise history. There is nothing quite like Nikki walking up to Richie in those final moments, thinking he was going to choose her (as we all did – they were perfect together) only to hear him say that while he thinks she’s amazing, she’s not the one for him. Her face FELL (see above) and we all shed a tear for the poor WA-based gal. She’s since gotten super loved-up by the way, so all’s well that ends well.

3. JARROD GETS DUMPED BY SOPHIE (SEASON 3, BACHELORETTE)

Everyone’s favourite stage-5 clinger made it all the way through to Sophie Monk’s top two, only to be CRUSHED when she chose Stu Laundy over him. That didn’t work out for Soph, but Jarrod made a name for himself and went on to meet Keira Maguire on Bachelor In Paradise earlier this year. They’ve also since split – but he will forever be remembered as the guy who wore his heart firmly on his sleeve.

4. SAM FROST DUMPS RICHIE (SEASON 1, BACHELORETTE)

The entire reason Richie scored a Bachelor spot was because everyone who religiously watched The Bachelorette’s first season screamed at the TV when angel-face Sam Frost let Mr. Cool Bananas go, opting instead for Sasha and Michael as top two. His openness and all-Aussie charm was a huge drawcard – and made all the emotions show on his face in that brutal rose ceremony.

5. MATTY J GETS HIS HEART PUMMELLED BY GEORGIA (SEASON 2, BACHELORETTE)

If there’s one moment more upsetting than when Nikki was destroyed by Richie, it’s this moment above – when Matty J proper breaks down after discovering Georgia Love has the hots for Lee, not him. Matty seemed genuinely heartbroken, and his vulnerability made every single Australian woman fall pregnant, fact.

6. MICHAEL TURNBULL DOGS THE BOYS (SEASON 1, BACHELOR IN PARADISE)

OMG YOU GUYS. This was an ~iconic~ moment in Bachie history. Michael Turnbull, the man who cannot stop trying to get Australia’s attention, decided last minute during a rose ceremony to choose Lisa Hyde, who was shacked up with Luke on the island at the time. He was so shook over his decision he basically spewed on the grass outside the ceremony villa or whatever. It didn’t break the nation’s hearts, but it was brutal as shit.

7. HONEY BADGER BOOTS EX-LOVE CASS (SEASON 6, BACHELOR)

Ah yes, this season featured PLENTY of heartbreak – but one of the most emotional moments had to be when Nick’s ex-flame Cass Wood finally exited the mansion. For all her (mildly unhinged) faults, Cass had a heart of gold and wore it firmly on her sleeve – so seeing her devastation over getting the boot was hard. Nick, to his credit, also seemed cut up about it.

8. JAKE REPLACES FLO WITH MEGHAN (SEASON 1, BACHELOR IN PARADISE

All drama on Bachie in Paradise was a) ridiculous and b) so juicy you might drown. A top moment for brutal rejections though had to be when Jake, who up until this point had been hooking up with Flo, meets Meghan Marx and promptly decides Flo is old news – like, literally walking back into the residence and basically booting her in seconds. OOFT.

9. SHANNON GETS BOOTED BY HONEY BADGER (SEASON 6, BACHELOR)

She may not have ever been much of a frontrunner, but Shannon’s exit from the Bachie mansion was pretty emotional – surprisingly so, actually. Why? Well, she really saw a potential future with Nick… but he never gave her much of a chance. They had one date early on and then nada, so her frustrated speech to him of “you never gave me a chance” really hit home.
