The ‘Mortal Kombat’ Remake Is Gonna Be Shot In Adelaide, Would You Believe

Here’s one from way outta left field: As it turns out, the long-promised Mortal Kombat movie remake is moving ahead at long last, and it will be shooting in, of all places, Adelaide.

Adelaide, South Australia.

No, we are not kidding.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall announced today that the city’s highly touted Adelaide Studios facility in Glenside has been tapped by New Line Cinema as the production location for the upcoming remake of the tremendously craptastic 1995 video game movie.

The production is set to create somewhere around 580 jobs with 1,500 local extras required for the movie, and will provide a financial boost of around $70 million to the local economy.

The remake has been in development for quite some time, with the Saw genius James Wan serving as producer on the movie alongside Tag and Isn’t It Romantic producer Todd Garner. Acclaimed commercial director Simon McQuoid will make his feature film directorial debut on the project.

Mortal Kombat will be quite easily the largest production ever shot in Adelaide’s burgeoning film market, and it follows on from other major international productions such as jailbreak biopic Escape From Pretoria starring Daniel Radcliffe which shot in the SA city in February.

No casting or plot details for the new Mortal Kombat were available at the time of writing, however there is long-running speculation Wan’s involvement means the film is angling for a gorier, R-rated tone.

Pre-production on the movie is slated to begin later this month, with cameras rolling on the movie later this year.

Once again, that’s production on Mortal Kombat in, and we cannot stress this enough, Adelaide.

Un-bloody-real.
