Morgan Freeman Accidentally Honoured On Nelson Mandela Billboard

Ooooooops. A billboard erected in India to honour the late Nelson Mandela has mistakenly featured an image of buttery-voiced actor Morgan Freeman in place of the South African leader.

Freeman, of course, did a bloody convincing job of playing Mandela in the 2009 film Invictus – apparently too convincing for the merchant who paid for the billboard to be put up in Coimbatore, India, shortly after the country declared 5 days of national mourning for Mandela. The billboard also featured the correct images of Ghandi (not Ben Kingsley), Mother
Teresa
(not Olivia Hussey) and
Martin Luther King Jr (not possibly Jamie Foxx if Oliver Stone‘s biopic goes ahead), and includes a message reading “We should be proud that we were part of an era when they lived.”

If there’s one thing the internet loves, it’s attributing stuff to Morgan Freeman that Morgan Freeman didn’t do. He didn’t say this about the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012:

Nor did he say this about homophobia:

Freeman did say this, however, offering his tribute to Nelson Mandela earlier this month.

“Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century. Nelson
Mandela was a man of incomparable honour, unconquerable strength, and
unyielding resolve—a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty,
freedom and the dignity of humankind. As we remember his triumphs, let
us, in his memory, not just reflect on how far we’ve come, but on how
far we have to go. Madiba may no longer be with us, but his journey
continues on with me and with all of us.”
