Join Us In Speculating About Miley Cyrus And Her Tiny New “Freedom” Tattoo

Miley Cyrus / Liam Hemsworth

There’s only so much one can accurately extrapolate from a teeny, tiny tattoo of the word “Freedom”. It’s hardly the most specific of words, and we’d argue the defining characteristics of “Freedom” actually vary from person to person.

Needless to say, divining any specific meaning from Miley Cyrus‘ impossibly fine new ink is a fool’s errand. Luckily for you, I am a god damned clown.

Taking to Instagram over the weekend, high-profile tattooist Daniel Winter showed off his latest work: a miniature “Freedom” above the knuckles of Cyrus’ right hand, and a copy of a hand-written note from Yoko Ono, inked onto Cyrus’ left shoulderblade.

Neither Winter nor Cyrus have expounded on the meaning of either tattoo, and there’s a reasonable argument to be made that each piece speaks for itself, but I find myself drawn to the idea it is a reaction to her split from Liam Hemsworth.

I’m not going to sit here and speculate that Hemsworth ever did anything worth seeking “Freedom” from, but as PEOPLE points out, the timing is definitely interesting. He filed divorce papers earlier this year, sparking renewed interest in Cyrus’ relationships.

Cyrus and her new Australian boyfriend, singer Cody Simpson, also got inked together in the not-too-distant past.

Simpson went ahead and got a skull with a scythe behind it that time around, yet he’s still alive, further proving the silliness of trying to ascertain meaning from random ink. Still, I can’t help but think those vanishingly lil’ lines have some kind of outsized meaning.
