Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Getting A Theatrical Reboot

Continuing the grand modern Hollywood tradition of taking existing products and dispensing with canon, the film industry now has its sights set on yet another beloved children’s series. That magnificent jumpsuit wearing, costumed monster fighting, miniature city destroying, (for whatever reason) vaguely dinosaur-related, moral panic causing, legendary series Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers is the next franchise in line for the much maligned process of rebooting.

Lionsgate are teaming up with Power Rangers’ parent company Saban Brands to develop a live-action film, which will be the first in a proposed new franchise. The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers TV series debuted in 1993, and has been in continuous production ever since, with each new series featuring different actors and shot under different names, such as Power Rangers Turbo, Power Rangers in Space, Power Rangers Ninja Force, Power Rangers S.P.D. and Power Rangers Jungle Fury.
Any new film has the lofty standards of the 1995 classic, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, famous for being filmed in goddamned Australia, y’all, and also for being not TOTALLY terrible, as this Don LaFontaine-voiced trailer will attest.

Whether the original cast will return in any shape, form or fashion remains to be seen. Though if they don’t we can be pretty safe in assuming that it’s certainly not because of conflicting work schedules.

There’s no timeline for the film’s release as of yet. But in the meantime, sit back, relax, and enjoy one of the most thunderously badass theme songs of all time.
