Men In Black To Hit The Flashy Thing, Reboot Franchise Without Will Smith

Here’s the problem with all these sequels, reboots, reimaginings, reinventions, reinterpretations, and so on that Hollywood is pumping out ad nauseam.

They keep making money. A lot of money.
And until such time as that stops happening, the studios are going to continue heading back to the well time and time again to rehash old ideas that worked in the past.
We’ve known for a while now – thanks to the gargantuan leak of Sony Pictures emails – that the Men In Black franchise has been in line for some sort of rebirth. The quiet word even seemed to suggest that a crossover with the 21 Jump Street universe wasn’t completely out of the question, unbelievably enough.
But now how that whole thing could conceivably come together is a hell of a lot clearer: They’re gonna wipe the slate clean and start again.
The giant red REBOOT button is apparently being hit on the MiB franchise, with original producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald not only confirming that the franchise will start anew, but it will be a whole new trilogy of films that – in all likelihood – will NOT feature Will Smith.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporterthe pair briefly touched on the status of the project, confirming a hell of a lot of information in a very small amount of sentences.

You produced Men in Black. Has there been talk of reviving that franchise with the new Sony regime?

PARKES – We’re in the middle of it. It’s very active.

Is Will Smith going to be part of it?

PARKES – Most likely no.

MACDONALD – It will be reinvented as a trilogy.”

How’s that for economy of words?

This existing as a good or bad idea is, for the most part, fairly irrelevant. The bottom line is that it’s a thing that’s happening whether anyone wants it or not.
But if Will Smith isn’t going to act in it, at the very least we can still hope he records the tie-in theme song.

Fingers, toes, everything crossed.
