Melissa McCarthy In Talks To Play Ursula In Live Action ‘Little Mermaid’

Disney‘s upcoming live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid may have found its first star, with Melissa McCarthy reportedly in talks to play the key role of Ursula The Sea Witch.

Rob Marshall of Into The Woods is set to direct the film. It will feature songs from the 1989 original, as well as several new compositions by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

While little more is known at this stage, Variety say that:

“Disney and the production team behind it are looking to make contemporary and compelling casting choices, while still paying homage to the beloved animated original.”

Ursula, who transforms the titular mermaid Ariel into a human so she can win the heart of Prince Eric, is one of Disney’s most iconic and beloved villains.

The character’s exaggerated design and campy mannerisms were famously based upon Divine, the legendary drag queen who starred in numerous John Waters movies.

It’s fair to say that Disney is on a bit of a remake kick at the moment. The last few months have seen live action remakes of Aladdin and Dumbo, and The Lion King isn’t far off.

I for one look forward to their inevitable live action Rescuers Down Under, starring Chris Hemsworth as a gritty and sexy take on kangaroo mouse Jake.
