The upcoming Ghostbusters has attracted a level of negativity and vitriol way beyond that which is normally directed at reboots and remakes. There are four reasons for this, and all of them are women.
A few weeks back, director Paul Feig reached breaking point had a go at the “assholes” who have added their voices to the criticism of the not-yet-released film.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Melissa McCarthy also had some things to say about the Ghostbusters backlash, and especially the old internet chestnut that reboots ruin childhoods.
Per their feature:
“All those comments – ‘You’re ruining my childhood!’ I mean, really,” McCarthy says drily. “Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood?” She shrugs. “I have a visual of those people not having a Ben [Falcone, McCarthy’s husband], not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet. I just hope they find a friend.”
Indeed.
Ghostbusters is out July 14.
