Matt Smith Of ‘The Crown’ Feels “Sorry” For Soon-To-Be Royal Meghan Markle

Matt Smith plays a royal spouse on the prestigious-as-balls Netflix drama series The Crown, and knows it can be a tough gig; when it comes to Meghan Markle, who will soon become an actual royal when she marries Prince Harry, he had some fairly blunt words of warning.

The actor recently made an appearance at a Vanity Fair event for The Crown‘s second season, alongside his co-star Claire Foy, and when asked about Markle’s recent engagement, he replied:

“I feel sorry for her. It’s such a transition in her life, and it’s such a huge thing to take on. Life as she knows it is gone. But hey, she’s marrying the prince of Britain—how exciting for her.”

Prince Philip, as portrayed by Matt Smith on the show, was initially uncomfortable with his position in Britain‘s royal family, giving up his career as a naval officer to support Queen Elizabeth, bowing to her in public and grumbling at the idea of giving up his surname.

(Phil has since settled into a comfortable life of swearing at photographers and spouting hugely racist things at almost every public appearance, so apparently it gets better … sort of).

Meghan Markle has already given up her job on Suits and relocated from Canada to be with Prince Harry, and will be expected to learn how and when to curtsy (a lot, apparently), be baptised into the Church of England and adjust to constant police guards and throngs of paparazzi.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith also discussed the engagement on a recent episode of Andy Cohen‘s Watch What Happens Live. He made another crack about how her life is “over”, and when asked who should play Markle in future seasons of The Crown, he picked … Selena Gomez.

Have her people call The Crown‘s people.
